Striving For More, Inc. is proud to have expanded the outreach of this powerful organization to support children (and their families) struggling with cancer offering physical, spiritual and emotional support.
Catherine Shireman joined the Striving for More team in September as our Development Director.
Seven years ago, Catherine left her job as Director of Reunion Giving at Duke School of Medicine to stay home with her children. During this time she stayed active with fundraisers at church, her children’s schools and in the community.
In 2008, a dear friend’s six-year-old son was diagnosed with a brain tumor and endured surgery, chemo and radiation. He would enjoy a short remission and then a relapse. This family’s battle had a profound impact on Catherine and she felt a call to action.
In May 2011, she organized a Saint Baldrick’s Foundation shave event in Apex, NC. With a starting goal of $50,000, the event is nearing a $75,000 total and is currently the 4th highest event in North Carolina. The event served as an excellent way for a community to rally around a sweet, little boy and his family who have suffered immensely, and of course raise desperately needed research funding.
After her personal experience with the havoc that childhood cancer inflicts on families, Catherine’s wish is for a cure to be found. Until then, she is committed to the Striving for More mission of ensuring quality emotional and spiritual support for children with cancer and their families.
Catherine is a 1996 graduate of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She lives in Apex NC with her husband Bobby and their two children.
